Use of Drama in Education

Drama has been one of the earliest forms of creative expressions. Since primitive times, humans have used drama to highlight the circumstances that shaped their life and they have expressed this through storytelling. It is still an important component of some societies and dance, chanting, folklore, rituals and identification with an inanimate or animate object are still part of these societies. All aspects of human life like birth, death, hunting, and working are affirmed and celebrated by the use of drama within the society.

Various features of drama can be used to reinforce the different facets of education. As such, there is a need for a change in classroom tactics, a need to reinvent constructive teaching and to rededicate the role of a teacher to the goal of training of youngsters.  The teachers should make youngsters take control of their life and take responsibility for their individual growth and also ensure that they pay back to the society. This is the focus of drama in education.

Module 1

It focuses at the difference between “drama” and “theatre” and also the need to understand the different elements of the dramatic process. It will also teach you how to know the different functions of drama.

Module 2

It Focuses at the teaching requirements and addresses issues related to teacher authenticity. We will also explore the importance of communications and also how to inculcate discipline among students.

Module 3

It Focuses at making drama work in the formal teaching setup. We will understand didactics and the reasons for different roles in drama and their importance. We will also learn how to animate a lesson.

Module 4

It focuses at the spoken word and its relevance. We will look at forced relaxation and the importance of proper breathing. We will also practice proper enunciation in this module.

Module 5

It focuses at movement in the context of drama. We will explore “space” and understand how to use “expression”. We will also understand the importance of communication.
